Franciscan Saints and Martyrs of the Americas

The Georgia Martyrs

Franciscans brought Christianity to the New World along with the Spanish settlements about the same time as the Jesuits did in Canada with the French settlements. Many Franciscans are recorded as giving their lives in this attempt. Martyrdoms occurred in Georgia, Kansas, and Arizona long before the Puritans landed in Massachusetts.

Collect: Almighty God, who sent your Son Jesus Christ to reconcile the world to yourself: We praise and bless you for those whom you sent in the power of the Spirit to preach the gospel to the peoples of the Americas. As we proclaim that the good news of Jesus is for all nations, so may we all become a community of love, gathered by prayer and faith in Jesus Christ our Savior. We ask it in his name. Amen.
